We're Skiing!

Deer Valley opened Saturday with 16 runs and ten lifts open. Not a bad start for opening weekend. While I have seen better conditions for opening day, I have also certainly seen much worse. On the runs that were open the coverage was quite excellent and the skiing was pretty fun. The weather turned quite cold last Friday and as the weekend progressed, steadily got colder which means that snow making has been going full-speed, nonstop since Friday. I expect by this weekend we will see at least two more lifts open and several more runs particularly over on the Northside area. That's the good news, but unfortunately it doesn't look like there's any significant snow in the forecast for at least a week.

As is customary, on Deer Valley's opening weekend, we had the Deer Valley Celebrity Classic Ski Race. This is a yearly event and is a fundraiser for support the Waterkeeper Alliance, a clean-water advocacy group. Though the celebrities that show up are not necessarily the most well-known, the fun is in watching our local celebrities. Phil and Steve Mahre, Heidi Voelker, AJ Kitt all former members of the US Ski Team. Watching them you can see that the competitive juices have not left.

It looks like plans are starting to come together for a celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Olympic winter games that were held here in Park City. There is talk of once again closing Main Street to vehicles, making it a pedestrian-only event with music and other events commemorating the 2002 Winter Olympics that were such a success. As this event starts coming together, I'll certainly let you know of it. This would be an event to make plans to come out and partake in.

In part of my efforts to stay as current as I can on the market I am constantly going out and looking at what's new and what's good. Last week I toured two areas of Deer Valley, the first being Empire Pass and the second the Silver Lake area at mid-mountain Deer Valley. The first thing that struck me was how little there is available. We've been talking for years that in spite of all the condos that were on the market in Empire Pass nothing new was being built and it would not be long before there was a shortage of available product. Well, this time has come. However, one place that is available and struck me as being one of the better buys, is a penthouse unit in the Arrowleaf building in Empire Pass. This is a true ski-in/ski-out, top floor unit with vaulted ceilings and spectacular views of Deer Valley. The unit features large windows, is beautifully furnished, comes with the full Talisker Club membership, and is listed for $2 million. Of everything that I saw in Empire I feel that this one is probably the best unit available.

In the Silver Lake area of Deer Valley, I feel from everything that I've seen the best condo available is a 3-bedroom Stag Lodge in the main building where you literally walk out your door and you're standing on the ski slopes. This unit is also beautifully furnished and updated, has large windows to take in the views, and is listed for $2.8 million. While these are my favorites and what I feel are the best buys in each area, there is certainly a wide variety of homes and condos to choose from.

Ski season is here, the town is buzzing with anticipation, and rental condos are filling up for the season. So if you haven't already done it, book your vacation and feel free to either call or email me for the locals' inside information on ski conditions.

4th of July and Golf

This past weekend was the 4th of July here in Park City (and everywhere else). Park City has the quintessential small town 4th of July parade. Entries this year included the Park City junior kid’s hockey team, who periodically broke into fights on main street. The People’s Health Clinic with people walking down main street on crutches and hospital gown’s open in the back. The junior luge team with kids coming down main street on luges. Several local breweries with beer taps on the back of the float. And the girls gymnastic team performing handsprings down the road. The parade was followed by a town party in the City Park with music, children’s games and the annual rugby tournament. As expected, this was capped off with a fireworks display at 10pm (sundown in this part of the world). Parade’s in small town America are a must see and Park City’s is one of the most enjoyable I have seen.

The rains of June have ended and summer has definitely arrived. The sunshine and heat have brought the wildflowers out in such a dazzling display of colors that it is breathtaking just driving around town. The mountains the greenest I have ever seen and the golf courses are plush and in superb condition. This past weekend a new golf course just outside of Park City, called Red ledges opened for play. This is a Jack Nicklaus “signature” course and is one of the prettiest courses I have seen. It is set amongst the red rocks, just southeast of park city in the town of Heber. Typical of a Jack Nicklaus course, it also very difficult with narrow fairways and long 2nd shots to small greens. However the setting and the scenery keep the experience extremely enjoyable.

Several other private golf courses in town are Tuhaye, Promontory, Glenwild, Jeremy Ranch and Park Meadows. Both Jeremy Ranch and Park Meadows are older courses that have been around since the early 80’s. While these are private courses, membership is open to anyone, not just homeowners in the neighborhood. Of the two, I find Jeremy Ranch more scenic and interesting. Winding through a broad valley the course has a lot of elevation changes and beautiful views of the Wasatch Mountains.

Glenwild, which was the first true golf course community in Park City and designed by Tom Fazio, is the course for serious golfers. While the clubhouse is beautiful, and the fitness and spa rooms are excellent, Glenwild is really all about the golf. This is where Michael Jordan has a home and plays golf.

Promontory, the second golf course community in Park City, has two 18 hole golf courses. The first course which has been open for several years was designed by Pete Dye. Their second course, which is going into its second season, is a Jack Nicklaus designed course. While Promontory certainly has a strong golf presence, I consider it more of a family oriented community. Promontory features the best children’s center in the area, a beautiful pool and spa, small lakes where children can fish and sail, and an outfitters cabin for hiking and biking in the summer, snowshoeing and cross country skiing in the winter. Promontory also has an excellent tennis facility with a beautiful stadium center court. For someone looking for golf, and activities for the entire family, Promontory is the best in the area.

Tuhaye, one of the newer golf communities around Park City, is best suited for golf enthusiasts who are also avid skiers. Tuhaye features a Mark O’Meara designed course and in the works is a Fazio course as well. While Tuhaye has an excellent spa and arguably the best pool in the area, the member’s clubhouse has yet to be built. What is unique about Tuhaye is that club members enjoy the golf facilities and a member’s clubhouse called The Tower Club, located on the mountain at Deer Valley Ski Resort. The Tower Club, which has ski-in/ski-out access, features a lounge where members can get lunch during their ski day avoiding the crowded Deer Valley restaurants or stop in après ski for a snack and favorite beverage. While Promontory has a member’s lounge located in the village at Silver Lake at Deer Valley and Red Ledges plans to build a clubhouse at the bottom of the gondola in Deer Crest, Tuhaye is the only club that offers a true ski in facility, on the mountain, where members can dine.

Victory Ranch is a golf and fishing community with the golf course scheduled to open later this summer. This is a spectacular course set high on a bluff overlooking the Jordanelle reservoir and the Wasatch range. I have driven this course and from the looks of it the views are going to be stunning and the course extremely enjoyable. What victory ranch offers that is unique is the Provo river running through it with world class trout fishing. No other course or community in the area can offer this amenity.

For the golf enthusiast Park City offers a total of 14 public and private courses each with their own unique characteristic. Whether you are a serious golfer, a golf/skier, golfer/fly fisher, or golfer/spa person, there is something for every taste. Come enjoy Park City in the summer, see how much father your ball flies in our thin mountain air and take advantage of the activities we have to offer.

Easter in the Mountains

It is Easter Week here in Park City. Visitors and guests are soaking in the warm spring sun while skiing and strolling around town. This is the time of the year when we ski for a few hours in the morning, have a leisurely lunch, and take the afternoon to sightsee. Spring is a wonderful time at the ski resorts, when the ski shops are offering terrific end of the season sales on clothing and ski equipment. This is a great time to pick up needed items or that new outfit for next year.
Of particular interest here is that the Park City Municipal Golf Course opens today. As a result of the unseasonably warm spring this year, the course is in excellent condition and ready for play. There is nothing like a few hours of skiing in the morning, lunch on the deck, and a leisurely round of golf in the afternoon. Even though we know that we have a good two more months of snowstorms, it’s nice to feel the warm sun and enjoy these spring days. This is definitely the transition time of year when we are waiting for the hiking/biking trails to dry out and the aspens to start greening up. This is also the time of the year when our thoughts turn to warm locations with warm sand and no snow.

Along with the bargains at the ski shops, this is also the time of year to pick up some great deals in real estate. Often times, owners may be ready to accept a lower offer on their home or condo than they would during the ski season, knowing that their rental income will be less for the next few months, and there are not many buyers around. Another advantage to looking at real estate now is that we can actually get into these rental condos that are booked constantly during the ski season. Of particular interest is a three-bedroom condo that I saw yesterday, on the mountain, in Silver Lake Village at mid-mountain Deer Valley. This is in a development called Royal Plaza, located right outside Deer Valley’s mid-mountain Lodge and next to the ticket booth. This is a top-floor, three-bedroom three bath condo with stunning views, and a large deck and hot tub overlooking the ski runs on Bald Mountain. There are only a couple of three-bedroom units in this small development, and this is the first one to be available in over 10 years. While it does need a complete remodel, its uniqueness in location and size make this condo the year’s best buy.

Now is the time to start planning your summer vacation to the mountains, to take in the cool mountain air and the many arts and music festivals around town.
